Chateau-Animaux Wins OMH Award at Annual Trade Show

Chateau-Animaux received a 2005 Valued Partners Appreciation Award from Old Mother Hubbard (“OMH”), manufacturer of the Old Mother Hubbard® line of baked dog biscuits and gourmet treats, and the Wellness® brand of dog foods and treats, and cat foods. OMH President Jim Scott, Jr., presented the Award at the annual H.H. Backer pet industry trade show in Atlantic City on April 2, 2005.

On hand to accept the award were Dennis Bourgault and Michael Suddath, Chateau-Animaux’s President and Vice President, Jay Keegan, store Manager, and Ashley Fox, Assistant Manager for Fish and Aquatics. The award recognized Chateau-Animaux for its “outstanding commitment, dedication and performance.” Bourgault indicated he was “surprised and grateful for the recognition.” He said the Capitol Hill pet supply store was one of the first in the region to carry Wellness, which is “not available in big-box pet store chains.”

According to OMH, Wellness is a “uniquely formulated holistic pet food made primarily with human grade ingredients… containing only whole foods, with no animal by-products, rendered animal fats, preservatives, fillers, or artificial colors and flavors.” “People today want what’s best for their companion animals, and Wellness ranks among the top,” added Bourgault.

Chateau-Animaux Featured in WASHINGTON SPACES Magazine

Chateau-Animaux, Capitol Hill’s pet supply and grooming shop, is currently being featured in Washington Space, a designer “Guide to Luxury Living” for DC, Maryland and Virginia.

The bi-monthly, high-gloss magazine, selected several products available at Chateau-Animaux for a two-page spread, entitled, “pamper your pet: PRETTY, BOLD & BEAUTIFUL ACCESSORIES FOR YOU AN YOUR PETS.”

Included in the Chateau-Animaux feature are decorative needlepoint dog breed pillows, custom leather collars, a festive jester dog bowl filled with Chateau-Animaux’s own Diamond dog biscuits, a “Rugby” stripe canvas dog collar and matching pet carrier, and a "happy hour" Martini ribbon collar. Also included in the layout were pet bowls, placemats and bottle corks from Mayfair Avenue, a kitchen and home entertaining product store also based on Capitol Hill.

Washington Spaces is a greater Washington Publishing, Inc. Publication, Susan Nixon, Publisher. The current issue also features two articles by Capitol Hill writer Stephanie Cavanaugh and can be ordered at www.washingtonspaces.com.

Chateau-Animaux Launches All-Natural Dog Biscuits, Targets Hotel Industry

Chateau-Animaux recently introduced a new line of premium “Diamond Dog Biscuits.” Made locally with the “finest, human-grade ingredients,” the biscuits are packaged fresh in attractive, deep blue pinstripe, re-sealable bags, labeled in both French and English.

The Diamonds are available in five varieties: Cheese, Italian (garlic & oregano), Peanut Butter, Ginger Snap, and Assorted. They are all natural and do not contain any wheat, corn or soy, three ingredients which can cause allergic reactions in certain dogs, according to Chateau-Animaux President, Dennis Bourgault.

In addition to selling the biscuits in its retail store at 224 7th Street, SE, and its website, www.chateau-animaux.com, the company last week began distributing the treats wholesale. Initially, Chateau-Animaux is targeting its wholesale sales toward gift shops in local top-ranked hotels. The company produced a full-color brochure on the biscuits and has begun taking wholesale orders.

According to Bourgault, the Capitol Hill store has many customers who are tourists, “looking for something local and unique to bring home to their dogs. Chateau-Animaux biscuits are hot sellers here, so we thought tourists staying at local hotels would also like them.” Copies of the brochure and wholesale order form are available at the store.

Chateau-Animaux Receives First 8th Street Façade Grant

Chateau-Animaux was the recent recipient of the first Barracks Row Main Street (“BRMS”) matching grant to improve the façade at its soon-to-be new location at 524 8th Street, SE. The grant program, funded by the Arcana Foundation, is part of an ongoing effort to stimulate improvements to the appearance and atmosphere of the Barracks Row historic commercial district on 8th Steet, SE, from Pennsylvania Avenue to the Navy Yard.

Grants provided under the BRMS program may be used for the materials and or labor necessary in the conservation, preservation, restoration, or renovation of a commercial building along Barracks Row. The plans are reviewed by the BRMS Design Committee and then permitted by DCRA and the DC Historic Preservation Office, since Barracks Row lies within the Capitol Hill Historic District.
Chateau-Animaux will use its $5,000 matching grant as part of its $1M renovation and restoration of its building on 8th Street. Construction on the site began in August 2004 and is expected to be completed in early June 2005. The façade renovation will include construction of a new, single door entrance and storefront display window, new second floor windows, and re-pointing and painting of the existing brick façade. The company also plans to install flower boxes and flags as part of its façade design.

Chateau-Animaux’s grant award was featured in the April 15-21 print edition of the Washington Business Journal.
